Home of the brave?

In this commentary, AIMS Board Chair John Risley makes clear that Canada’s relationship with its native population is in need of complete overhaul. As Canadians we all have a responsibility to be aware of the public policy issues facing us, and be brave enough to find solutions to those problems.

Risley emphasizes the key areas of focus to improve the living situation for First Nations across the country: leadership, native rights, housing and property rights, health care, education, and most importantly, independence.

In Home of the brave?, John Risley argues that we simply must make the First Nations a truly independent community within Canada. We must allow First Nations to take responsibility for the issues within their community, but also give them the tools to do so. True independence for Canada’s First Nations could be on the horizon. But will we be brave enough to make it happen?
