Students Without Borders, Universities Without Illusions

They may not have liked what they heard, but the chairs of universities certainly sat up and listened. In one of the keynote addresses to the annual conference of National University Board Chairs and Secretaries (NAUBCS), AIMS president Brian Lee Crowley provided insight to the universities of the future. He warned the guardians of Canada’s post-secondary education that they need to think outside the sacred, but physical, halls of academia.

Short-term Job Gains will cost Newfoundlanders millions of dollars

AIMS Research Fellow Peter Fenwick says Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams is making a big mistake on offshore development. Fenwick says Williams is pushing for short-term jobs and economic activity, instead of waiting for the bigger royalty cheque when the project starts production.

Budgets Atlantic Canadian Style

Early in 2005, AIMS published a paper entitled "Could Do Better" which assessed provincial finances in Atlantic Canada. The paper concluded that in the 2004/05 fiscal year governments in the region didn’t do a very good job of balancing voter demands, while promoting an economic environment to attract skilled labour and business capital. AIMS studied the budgets of the 2005/06 fiscal year and concluded the region's governments are still failing to implement a formula for economic growth.

Hidden behind the mountain of extra federal money in Newfoundland and Labrador's budget is the awful truth that the provincial government plans to keep piling more and more debt upon the taxpayers of the province at close to half a billion dollars a year for the foreseeable future. The highest indebted taxpayers in the country will become even more crippled by the mountain of debt being piled upon them.

The AIMS concept called Atlantica is a trade corridor reaching from Halifax to Buffalo - the International Northeast Economic Region - and it can change the prosperity of the region while improving the access of the North American heartland to emerging international trade patterns. It would appear business and community leaders in Buffalo, New York agree, after hearing details of Atlantica from AIMS president Brian Lee Crowley. He explained to a breakfast meeting of political leaders and a luncheon crowd at the Rotary Club of Buffalo how the northeast trade corridor from Halifax to Buffalo would benefit all communities along the route. Both events attracted the influential leaders of the community interested in learning more about Atlantica.
