About Brian Lee Crowley

Dr. Brian Lee Crowley is the current Managing Director of the MacDonald-Laurier Institute (MLI), and the first President of AIMS. He is a best-selling author, frequent commentator and columnist, and speaker. A former professor at Dalhousie University, Dr. Crowley led the formation of AIMS in the 1990s and remained President for most of the intervening years until founding MLI in 2010.

Work is still the best antidote to poverty

The key to reducing poverty is work, not welfare dependency. In this commentary from the Halifax Herald and Moncton Times & Transcript, AIMS’ President Brian Lee Crowley says the main obstacle to improving conditions for those on low-incomes is not the absence of jobs. On the contrary, industries around Atlantic Canada are getting increasingly exercised about looming labour shortages, and most employers tell pollsters they have real difficulty finding workers. It’s poorly designed social programs, both federal and provincial, that remain the biggest obstacle to helping people get back into the labour force and out of poverty.

Report card: shooting messenger won’t help

AIMS is front and centre in the Atlantic Canada media this week following the release of its Report Card on Atlantic Canadian high schools. The Report Card, which ranks regional high schools' performance, has ignited a heated debate over not only the results, but also the impact the study will have on the education system. Critics inside the education establishment have gone so far as to tell teachers not to even read the study. Supporters are saying this type of external review has been far too long coming.

To continue to progress, humanity needs more economic growth, not less, and needs it to occur in ways that allow us to husband our resources, preserving their value for not only ourselves but future generations. Where hunger continues to be a problem, for example, it is due almost exclusively to two factors. One is politics and poor quality institutions that prevent investment in land, and the second is standards of living too low to allow access to the very latest in modern technology. However, as AIMS President Brian Lee Crowley told the annual meeting of the Nova Scotia Forest Products Association recently, there are very specific circumstances and institutions that are necessary for this creative mixing of human intelligence and natural capital to take place as quickly and on as broad a scale as is needed.
