About Brian Lee Crowley

Dr. Brian Lee Crowley is the current Managing Director of the MacDonald-Laurier Institute (MLI), and the first President of AIMS. He is a best-selling author, frequent commentator and columnist, and speaker. A former professor at Dalhousie University, Dr. Crowley led the formation of AIMS in the 1990s and remained President for most of the intervening years until founding MLI in 2010.

The Summer University at Aix-en-Provence invited AIMS President Brian Lee Crowley to give a series of lectures at their 2000 session. In his second lecture he argues that federalism as traditionally practised is based on an outdated view of the economy. In the future, power will be less devolved to different levels of government and instead be far more widely dispersed within civil society. He also draws on Canadian examples to illustrate how federalism can be a rent-seeker's paradise.

No special deals, one tax cut for all

THE GOOD NEWS is the Nova Scotia government has realized that tax cuts don't cost the public treasury money. Leave more money in the hands of companies and consumers, they invest and consume more, generating more economic activity, and more tax revenue. It's a virtuous circle. The bad news is that the province wants to dole its tax cuts out on a discretionary basis to a few companies. In so doing, the government is spoiling the business climate, frightening investors and damaging the economic growth it claims to want to stimulate."
