Rapid changes in how Canadians meet their information needs bring direct challenges to the newspaper business in our country. And now Canada’s major newspapers are looking for government funds to face those challenges.
But handing out a government subsidy is not the answer.
In some communities, entrepreneurs have started new businesses printing newspapers or delivering news in new ways that are cheaper and more effective.
In our own region, newspapers have changed to lower costs while delivering the quality product people expect.
The last thing newspapers need is public cash.
Instead, they need to adapt how they do business to the new market demands.
