NL news outlet VOCM published an article Thursday reporting on AIMS’ recent policy paper Revisiting the Minimum Wage in Atlantic Canada, including comments from our own Ed Hollett.
From the article:
“AIMS’ Ed Hollett says in a research paper the group released last month, it was clear what the result would be here in Newfoundland and Labrador. He says you need only look to other provinces to find that out.
Hollett says their study also showed youth unemployment across Atlantic Canada where minimum wages are comparable, the only place that experienced any decrease in youth unemployment was here in this province.
He says that was caused by general economic prosperity over 15 years. If you want better paying jobs, grow the economy, and see more employment, he says you have to create jobs. He says there’s no evidence jacking up minimum wage will produce those results people are looking for.”
