The bail-out of union benefit plans made headlines almost as large as the bail-out of large corporations. Then there’s the news that unions are being asked to give up contract perks, like banking up to 20 sick days a year. The bail-outs and concessions are blamed on the current economic woes, but it has also opened a whole new discussion and focused attention on workplace perks.
As CBC Radio’s national phone-in show Cross Country Checkup prepared to talk about unions and union benefits, it turned to AIMS Executive Vice President Charles Cirtwill to put the case in perspective.
In this Commentary, based on the interview with Anne Medina, Cirtwill talks about the changes confronting unions and suggests the pending labour shortage will make union membership even more superfluous.
