The 2nd annual speakers series, held in Toronto at Grano Restaurant, explores the potential and limits of the use of American power in the Middle East and the prospects of democraticization for the region. The Atlantic Institute for Market Studies has been a partner in the Grano Series since its inception.
On February 6th, 2006, author and professor Fouad Ajami spoke on “Islam’s shattered pact with modernity”.
Ajami is the Majid Khadduri Professor and Director of Middle East Studies at the Johns Hopkins University School for Advanced International Studies in Washington DC. He is the author of The Dream Palace of the Arabs: A Generation’s Odyssey, The Arab Predicament, Beirut: The City of Regrets, The Vanished Imam, and other works. His essays have appeared in The New Republic, The New York Times Book Review, The Times Literary Supplement (London), The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post Book World, and The New York Times.
Ajami’s talk was timely as he explored what is happening in Demark and around the world because of a number of political cartoons.
