In Memoriam
John C. (“Jack”) Hartery, a Director of AIMS, passed away suddenly on October 30. He was 63.
Mr. Hartery retired last April as President and General Manager of Stora Enso Port Hawkesbury Limited, the Nova Scotia subsidiary of the Swedish-Finnish forest industry giant, Stora Enso Oyj. Mr. Hartery was responsible for securing for Port Hawkesbury the world’s largest paper machine, which started up in 1998. The machine makes “supercalendered” paper, a semi-glossy paper used for magazines, catalogues and flyers. The project was, at $850 million, one of the largest industrial projects ever in Nova Scotia. The Port Hawkesbury mill has also operated a newsprint line since 1971.
Besides being a seasoned papermaker and skilled industrialist, Mr. Hartery’s greatest strength was his people skills. He understood that successful industries need dedicated employees, and “Jack” was a master at getting all members of his team working together.
Mr. Hartery was a strong supporter of community life in the Strait of Canso area, and more broadly in Nova Scotia as a whole. In recognition of this, and of his work at Stora Enso, the University College of Cape Breton awarded him an Honorary Doctorate. He also served on the Board of Governors of St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish.
Mr. Hartery’s dedication to his Province and his wise counsel in business and community affairs will be greatly missed. The Board and staff of AIMS extend to his family, especially his wife Shirley, their deepest sympathies.
